08 Mar Living Walls for a Roof Garden
In our cities and towns, where there may not be space for traditional horizontal gardens, vertical ones are a fantastic solution. The footprint can be as small as required, so we can even fit one on a balcony. But living walls for a roof garden are absolutely ideal. They give it the wow factor visually, that goes without saying. However, that’s not all. They also create a green, tranquil space, making somewhere to escape from fast-paced city life. And they support biodiversity, providing habitat and forage for pollinating insects and for birds. Read on to find out more!
We’re sure you can see from our photo that this roof terrace garden in Camden, London, is something special. If you look at the rest of the picture, there are buildings all around. The living walls we installed, and the smaller planters, are the only green you can see. Just imagine how it feels to come out onto the roof of this building and enjoy this beautiful space, right in the middle of the city. For the people who work here, it’s a great place to stop and relax during a busy day, with amazing views over the whole area.
Now imagine it from a bird’s point of view, or a butterfly’s. If this is the only planting nearby, wouldn’t you head straight for it? A bird can rest on a green wall, forage for berries, or even nest inside one. (We’ve seen it – check out our Living Walls Attract Birds post ). Pollinating insects like bees and butterflies can find nectar. Other insects find habitat. But overall, the increase in biodiversity thanks to the presence of a living wall is significant. This is what makes urban greening so important. So many species are in decline right now, and even one green wall in an urban area can make a difference.
So, do you want to add a little colour to the grey of your urban life? Would you like a garden where you thought one might have been impossible? Somewhere to spend a peaceful moment and enjoy some wildlife in urban surroundings, but where you can look out over the city? A roof garden with living walls might be the choice for you.
