kitchen and bathroom living walls work brilliantly as part of an interior design scheme and also bring benefits for wellbeing and health

Kitchen and Bathroom Living Walls

Most of us have houseplants in our homes, and lots of us will have plants in the bathroom and the kitchen.  But have you ever considered making more of an interior design statement with your plants?  An indoor vertical garden looks amazing in any decor scheme, and kitchen and bathroom living walls are particularly stunning.  We explain below why plants enjoy these rooms, and why living walls are even better than single plant specimens.

Why grow plants in kitchens and bathrooms?

We know many plants enjoy the increased humidity of a bathroom’s atmosphere, so it’s sensible to put them there.  They also add a relaxing, tranquil vibe in a space where we want to feel relaxed.  Kitchens, too, tend to have more humid air, due to steam produced by cooking, boiling kettles, and using hot water appliances such as dishwashers.  This means plants that enjoy a slightly more humid atmosphere tend to do well there too.  Another reason we grow plants in kitchens is when we want them to hand for cooking.  As an example, you might have a windowsill full of herbs for cooking or cocktails! Mint, rosemary, oregano, basil, chives, etc. all do well in pots in the kitchen.

Why a living wall is better

There are several reasons why a living wall has advantages over single plants.  One obvious benefit is that if all your plants are in one vertical garden, you don’t have to lift up lots of individual specimens to dust under the pots!  Likewise you can relax on the watering front.  We can install automatic irrigation in our interior living walls, so you can forget about manual watering totally.  Alternatively, if you choose a vertical garden without irrigation, the troughs we use store enough water for about two weeks at a time.  There’s an indicator on the side that makes it easy to see when you need to add more, and refilling is done in one place – you don’t have to add water to each trough separately.

And it looks fabulous!

If you’re not worried about the practical aspects of looking after a living wall versus individual plants, look at the visual ones!  Our photos show how incredible kitchen and bathroom living walls look.  The one we designed and installed in our client’s kitchen has created a visual impact that is so powerful!  And the bathroom photo, which comes from a fabulous online blog written by an Australian lady plumber,  The Plumbette shows that the same is true in a bathroom.  If you’re redesigning your bathroom in the super-fashionable Japandi style (Japanese/Scandinavian crossover), you can’t do better than including a living wall.
