Living Walls from Start to Finish

You might find it surprising to learn that the installation process for our vertical gardens doesn’t take that long.  We can put up a larger green wall in a day, and a small one only half a day.  Our team aims to cause the minimum of disruption, so you can enjoy your new living wall immediately.  We thought you would like to see our ‘living walls from start to finish’ sequence of photos above.  That way you’ll know exactly what to expect from the installation process.

Our installers have years of experience in fitting the structural elements. This means that building the wall happens much faster than you could do it yourself!  Similarly, they have so much experience in planting, ensuring that they choose the best individual plant specimens for your green wall.  It’s a very streamlined process, so you can go from bare fence or brick to a beautiful green space in the course of one day!

How does the process unfold?

The first job we tackle is getting the structural elements in place.  We measure the space before giving you a quotation for your living wall.  This means that on the day, we know exactly how many Plantbox troughs we need and arrive ready to fix them in the agreed position.  In the case of the pictures above, our clients wanted a wall-mounted vertical garden that did not go all the way to the ground.  For this reason, we screwed all the troughs directly to the existing surface, which you can see in the first couple of photographs.  If you prefer, we can stack Plantbox troughs to form a freestanding structure.  However, for stability, we still advise fixing it in the same way that you would fix a bookcase to your wall indoors.

Once the troughs are set up, we add irrigation if required.  Our living walls can be fully irrigated, and the team at our sister company, Rosewood Irrigation Services, are the irrigation experts!  However, where full irrigation isn’t required, manual watering is very easy.  The troughs have a reservoir that means they only need topping up every couple of weeks.

How is the planting worked out?

Once the living wall structure is in place, the fun really starts!  Calum, our vertical garden designer, works out the whole planting design in advance.  He takes various elements into consideration.  These include the location and aspect of the garden, and also the preferences of the client, of course.  He agrees the choice of plants and the planting pattern in advance with the customer depending on the look they want.  All this means that before the installation day, he can make sure that he has all the right plants available.  And of course he chooses the best specimens for this particular wall.

Planting itself doesn’t take too long, with all the individual plants waiting ready.  if you look across the pictures, you’ll see the progress of the planting.  Seeing the wall come to life, filled with beautiful plants, is something we never get tired of!  We think they all look amazing!
